Measurement-based Music Generation

Using quantum-circuit measurement outcomes to generate musical events.

Principle

This approach maps quantum-circuit measurement results onto discrete musical choices. In the published stochastic-note model, a qubit measurement axis is related to a direction on the circle of fifths. Measurement outcomes are then associated with alternative pitches.

Because it uses measurement outcomes rather than direct access to the full wavefunction, this approach can in principle be implemented using measurements on quantum hardware.

Models and examples

Stochastic note generation

The research uses quantum gates and measurements to determine notes probabilistically and considers correlations arising from multiple qubits. The publication shows a graphical interface for assigning measurement axes and examples of generated note sequences.

Further measurement-based schemes

The paper also discusses quantum phase modulation and quantum-game-theoretic models. This overview does not imply that all proposed schemes were implemented in one software application.
